Southern Soul beats: what makes a trail ride record

Southern Soul is grown-folk music. It is made for a cooler in the truck bed, a line of trucks on a county road, and a floor that fills up the second the groove hits. Here is what goes into the beats, who they are for, and how to get one.

Empty juke-joint stage with an organ, an electric guitar, a drum kit and warm amber stage lights

The sound

Southern Soul sits between soul blues and R&B. Think of a live band in a juke joint. A bass that walks, a drummer who stays in the pocket and does not show off, organ and clean guitar, horns on the hook, and room for a singer to tell a story. It is not Trap. The drums are not the point. The groove is.

There are three lanes inside it:

The live band feel is the whole thing. If it sounds like a laptop, it is not a trail ride record.

Tempo

Rough ranges, not rules:

Most of my Southern Soul catalog lives between 85 and 105. That is where the walk, the slide and the wobble all work, and where a singer can sit on the beat without rushing.

Who it is for

Southern Soul singers in the Carolinas, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas. Blues singers moving toward R&B. R&B singers who want a record their aunties will play. Bands that need a track to rehearse to before the gig. DJs who run trail rides and line-dance sets and want something nobody else is playing.

If you want a Trap beat, this is not the page. If you want a record that works at a family reunion on Saturday and on the radio Sunday morning, keep reading. The free pack has a few Southern Soul beats in it too, if you want to try the sound before you spend anything.

How I build them

I start with the groove, not the melody. Bass and drums first, played until the pocket feels like a band and not a grid. Then organ or keys, then guitar, then horns if the song asks for them. I leave space on purpose. A Southern Soul vocal needs room to breathe, and the beat should never fight it.

Every beat is mixed in my room in Durham, then checked in the car and on a phone speaker, because that is where these records actually get played. The lease files are untagged MP3 + WAV. The Unlimited lease adds the trackouts when the beat has them, so your engineer can drop the horns out of a verse or push the bass for the floor.

I have put Southern Soul beats on YouTube for years under the name REALSOULFULBEATS. The ones for sale are on the Southern Soul page, with the play button and the price on the same line.

What to listen for before you buy

Play the beat all the way through, not just the first eight bars. Four things to check:

Every beat on the Southern Soul page has a tagged preview you can play as many times as you want, with the BPM and the key next to the title, so you know what you are getting before you pay.

Buy one, get one free until Oct 31

Right now every Southern Soul lease is buy one, get one free. Two Cook Up Leases for $50, or two Cook Unlimited Leases for $150. Same lease on both beats, as many pairs as you want. It ends on Oct 31, 2026, and the store turns it off by itself, so there is no code to remember and nothing to ask for.

Press play on the Southern Soul page, pick two, pick the lease, pay by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. The untagged files and the license PDFs in your name land in your inbox the second the payment clears. Want a beat to yourself? Every one has an "Exclusive · Make an offer" button, and the beats marked "No stems" are a flat $200 exclusive, no offer needed.
